Mexico Quilt

by Nadine Edwards

I call this quilt "Mexico" because the blocks are composed of red, white, and green, the main colors in the flag of Mexico. This quilt makes me think of my dear mother, who was born in Mexico. She made dozens of durable quilts from used clothing. These quilts kept her eleven children warm and they were beautiful as well. Even though her children are grown, my mother continues to transform hand-me-downs into lovely quilts.

The deep red color and the deep green color are roughly of equal intensity. The blocks are set off from each other by dusty gold sashing. The background fabric, although it may look white, is ivory. Fabric requirements are 3.5 yards of red, 2 yards of green, 1 yard of ivory, and 1.25 yards of gold. To leave a margin for error, it's a good idea to buy a little more fabric than is actually needed.
